Biography

Having trained as a journalist in Barcelona and London, Sandra Balsells (Barcelona, 1966) has worked on numerous photojournalistic assignments in war zones around the world. In 1991, while working for The Times of London she covered the war in Croatia. From then until 2000 a large part of her work centred on the Balkans, although she has also worked in Israel, Palestine, Mexico, Romania, Canada, Cuba, Mozambique, Haiti and Sicily. Her photographic reports have been published in the Spanish (La Vanguardia, El Mundo, Avui and El Temps, amongst others) and international press (The New York Times, The Toronto Star, The Observer, Today, Evening Standard and Woman). In 2006 she was awarded the Premio Ortega y Gasset Prize for Journalism for her work in the former Yugoslavia.

She has taken part in collective exhibitions such as Arxiu Universal: The condition of the document and the modern photographic utopia, MACBA (2007), as well as individual exhibitions. She has curated photographic projects such as Latidos de un mundo convulso, Caja Madrid, Barcelona (2007), and Desaparecidos al MUSAC de Lleó, at the CCCB in Barcelona and La Casa Encendida in Madrid (2011). She is the author of Balkan in memoriam (Blume, 2002) and co-author of Montreal Metropole vue par 30 grands reporters (Aux Yeux du Monde, 2000). For television she has produced the documentaries Dying for the Truth (Channel 4, 1994) and Retratos del alma (TVC, 2004).
