Xavier Ribas

Biography

Xavier Ribas was born in Barcelona in 1960. He studied social anthropology and documentary photography. He lives between Barcelona and Brighton (England). His photographs document the transformative processes at play in contemporary metropolises and the ways of life that they generate. He is interested in subjects such as public space, memory, urban renewal, and leisure and often reveals infrequently-seen aspects of urban archaeology and structure. His work has broached issues such as peripheries, the dialogue between nature and town planning, and specific geographical settings with a highly-charged historical significance. His photographic installations, which adopt a variety of visual approaches that transcend the documentary genre, test the limits of contemporary city life.

His work has been exhibited at prestigious photographic events and many photographic institutions such as PhotoEspaña in Madrid (1998 and 2006), The Photographer’s Gallery in London (1999 and 2004), the Biennale d’art contemporain in Lyon (2001), the Festival de Photographie de la Ville de Sedan (2004), the MACBA in Barcelona (2008), the George Eastman House - Rochester in New York (2009), the Neue Pinakothek in Munich (2009), the Centro de Arte 2 de Mayo in Madrid (2010) and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2011). He has worked with institutions such as the Centre National des Arts Plastiques in France, the International Photography Research Network Fellowship and the University of Toulouse. His works can be found in the most outstanding photographic collections in Spain and abroad such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain (FNAC) in France, the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) in Seville and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC) in León.
