Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona

About the institution

As a public institution the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) has responsibility for disseminating contemporary art, providing a wide array of visions and generating critical debates about art and culture, a mission that aspires to reach out to an ever wider audience. The MACBA should, therefore, be understood as an open institution where people can find a space for public exhibitions. It also has an educational function, the will to innovate and a commitment to conserving heritage and working with other institutions. These aims, taken together, place the MACBA at the head of the world of contemporary art in Catalonia and strengthen Barcelona's position as an internationally renowned capital.

It is administered through a Consortium that was created in 1988, which currently comprises the Generalitat de Catalunya, Barcelona City Council, the Ministry of Culture and the MACBA Foundation. In 1995 the MACBA opened its premises in the heart of the Raval district of Barcelona in a new building designed by the US architect Richard Meier. Since then the Museum has had a leading role in the dissemination of art and contemporary cultural practice, the impact of which has contributed to establishing Barcelona's name for innovation.
