The Alt Empordà District Archive (ACAE) forms part of the Generalitat de Catalunya's Network of District Archives and was founded after an agreement was signed on 31 January 1984 between the Catalan Government Ministry of Culture and Figueres Town Council, which helps support it. The Alt Empordà District Archive has been administered by Figueres Town Council since the archive was created.
The official opening, which took place on 16 February 1991, was attended by the president of the Generalitat. It is located in the west wing of the former municipal slaughterhouse, a building designed by the modernista architect, Josep Azemar, and built in 1907.
The main aim of the ACAE is to conserve and protect Alt Empurdà's public and private documentary heritage. By 31 December 2015 the archive had 1,665 linear metres of documentation, covering a period from the 11th century to the present day. It contains numerous collections from institutions and associations, 19th-century notarial protocols, legal records, as well as those of various companies and other historical archives. It also contains an extensive collection of the district's documentary heritage, as well as a photographic collection of just over 40,000 photographs, low-resolution versions of which are available from the collection's search engine.
