Israel Ariño

Biography

Israel Ariño graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona and studied photography at various centres between 1992 and 1998. From 2001 he devoted himself entirely to professional activities in the field of photography, dividing his time between teaching at the faculty of Fine Arts and other specialised centres in Barcelona, and the production of his own work, as well as working as an editor at the Ediciones Anómalas publishing company.

Since 2001 his work has been exhibited regularly throughout Spain, and in France particularly. Amongst the most important exhibitions are Le temps éparpillé 1995-2015 at l’Imagerie in Lannion, Atles i altres cartografies (2013) at the Galeria Tagomago in Barcelona, L’explorateur et les caprices du hasard (2012) at the Carré Amelot in La Rochelle, Crónicas de un desembarco (2010) at the Mapamundistas Festival in Pamplona and Espacio Imaginario (2008) at the 6th International Photography and Arts Biennale in Liège (Belgium). He has been invited as resident artist on several occasions: at l’Aparté, lieu d’art contemporain in Iffendic for the Terra Incognita project in 2012, at the Carré d'art in Chartres-de-Bretagne for the Territoires d’expériences project (2012), at the Colombier Cultural Centre in Rennes for the Cámara Obscura project (2011), at the British Museum in London for the Apollo Epikouros project (2009) and at the Artothèque in Vitré in 2009, where he presented the series Images d’un monde flottant. In 2012 his book Atlas, published by Ediciones Anómalas, was selected to take part in the exhibition, Books that are photos, photos that are books, at the Museo de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, an exhibition which brought together the most important books of Spanish creation over the previous five years.

His work can be interpreted as an exploration of universes, as seen from the emotional sphere. Photography is, for him, nothing more than an attempt to map a fictional space full of mysterious and ambiguous, open-ended meanings that diminish reasoned experience and suggest the image's most poetic character.

His work is exhibited at the VU gallery in Paris and the Tagomago gallery in Barcelona.
