Diego Yriarte

Biography

Diego Yriarte was born in Valentín Alsina, a district in the south of Buenos Aires (Argentina) in 1967. He studied photography at the Fotoclub Buenos Aires. In the early 1990s he began to specialise in nautical journalism, reporting live from yachts in sailing competitions for some of the Buenos Aires's main radio stations. He soon began to write articles and publish his photographs in the general press and specialised magazines. Towards the end of the decade he produced various photographic exhibitions on regattas in Argentina and Uruguay. Notable amongst these were Imágenes frescas at the Argentino Yacht Club and the Regata Colon 98, in Colonia, Uruguay.

He moved to Spain in 2000 and started to work with the magazines 100x100 Regata, Skipper, Pesca abordo and Neumáticas and continued to do so until the end of 2003 when, having established himself as a freelance photographer, he began to collaborate with the magazine Navegar and became involved in other projects such as See Visual Media (an image and communication agency) together with the photographer Ivo Rovira.

Early in 2006 he embarked on an exhibition project, together with Muntaner-Muxi Arquitectes, that was different from his usual nautical work. This was an exhibition on the iconic building, La Pedrera, entitled La Catalunya Paisatge. It was published in the magazine Nexus by the Caixa Catalunya Foundation.

At the end of November 2007 he worked, for the first time, with the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, publishing a series of photographs in the book, Esports de mar by Àngel Joaniquet, part of the collection Patrimoni Marítim, published by the Museu Marítim de Barcelona and the Angle publishing company.

This collaboration continues to this day in a number of the museum's publications. Also, since 2011, he has taught on photography courses and workshops (on the Instantànies de mar cycle) intended for the general public, the aim of which is to raise awareness about the distinct nature of nautical photography and maritime heritage.

In 2013 he took part in the exhibition Màquines de vent based on the Diego Yriarte collection held by the Museu Marítim de Barcelona.
